How Long Does It Take To Install A Sliding Glass Door?

Many homeowners are interested in doing housing installations themselves to save a little money. If you have an idea of what you’re doing, this can be a great way to stay on budget. However, if you don’t have any experience with the modifications you need and plan to wing it, you may want to consider hiring a professional.

Installing a sliding glass door is an intricate process. How long it takes depends on the size of the door and if it is going in a new spot or replacing another door. A professional can have a new sliding glass door installed in just a few hours, but it could take several days for a novice.

You must remove the old door before installing a new sliding glass door, which can be a messy process. If there were no doors originally, you will need to cut out and trim an adequately-sized frame. You will need to add a sill or base before installing the new glass door to keep it on the track so that it opens and closes smoothly.

The new sliding glass door needs to be assembled before installation. Once the door has been put in place, it will need to be leveled and caulked. You will want to seal it thoroughly to avoid water or a draft from coming in. You may also need to drill new holes in the framing, even if there was a door there beforehand, as they may not line up correctly.

If you are planning on installing a sliding glass door yourself, you should plan on having your patio closed down for at least a couple of days. Consider purchasing a tarp to keep the entryway blocked if you do not get the door in before the end of the day.

Not everyone has the time or energy to install a sliding glass door, and there is no shame in asking for help. To ensure having the installation done in a timely fashion, consider hiring an experienced contractor to do the work for you. Otherwise, plan on setting aside a few days for this project to make sure that it is done correctly.
